Sunday Snippets

Tidbits of information I picked up this week:
  • Dads can get postpartum too - a US study found that one in ten new fathers experience symptoms of depression during the first few weeks of parenthood. Irritability, anger, inability to sleep and appetite changes are among the top symptoms - if he is experiencing these, encourage him to talk a doctor. (Redbook, March 2011).
  • Acrylamide, a chemical formed in high temp cooking (like that required for fries and potato chips), may increase the risk of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women, according to research published in Britain. To protect yourself, keep body fat below 25% to reduce the risk of storing cancer-causing chemicals. (Health, March 2011)
  • You might be avoiding it because of the high sugar content, but maybe it is time to reconsider juice for you & your family: people who drink O.J. - and other 100% fruit juices - are more likely to meet their vitamin A & C, calcium and potassium daily requirements than those who avoid them. For maximum benefit, your best bets are pink grapefruit, orange, white grapefruit, pineapple and prune juices. (Health, March 2011)
  • Looking for a new ally to help you navigate the various media options available to your children? Register your child on commonsensemedia.org and s/he will receive an age appropriate monthly listing of books, TV shows, games, websites and application to try. Win-win! (Today's Parent, March 2011)
  • Regina King shared this de-cluttering strategy recently: when things start to pile up, throw them in a box, write the date on it. If it is still sealed 18 months later - donate the whole box without even looking through it first. (I would add - anything left in the box after 18 months can be donated too!) O magazine, March 2011.
PS: Do you know what time it really is? Clocks went ahead one hour last night ;-)
