Cinco de Mayo is not really Mexican Independence Day - that is in September. Instead, it marks the defeat of the French Army by the Mexican militia at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In Mexico, it is not widely celebrated, though it is big in the Mexican state of Puebla. However, it is a popular holiday throughout the US (and Canada to a lesser extent) for those of Mexican descent. It is a fun day to celebrate their roots and culture.
