What To Do This Weekend - Go Visiting in Your City and Support a Great Cause

Well, it's here! And not just the weekend ;-)

This is the St. John's Doors Open Weekend when several important and historic venues throughout the City will open their doors to the public, often with guided tours or special events. Some of the participating sites this year:
  • Winterholme Suites & Spa- I have never been inside this beautiful Victorian home turned B&B/Spa.... I have a feeling THIS is the weekend ;-)
  • Commissariat House - This is a provincial Historic site and was built as the home and offices of the the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland. I visited it as a child, and pass it all the time when we are at Bannerman and am looking forward to getting a glimpse inside again!
  • Railway Coastal Museum - Remember when this actually was the train station? The museum covers the history of the Newfoundland Railway up to confederation as well as the history of the island's Coastal Boats and explores the contributions each made to the economy, transportation, religion, medicine, education, and tourism of Newfoundland. Children love it - and there will be puppet shows, activities for children, guided tours in honour of Doors Open!
  • Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility - If your first thought was huh? or what exactly do they do anyways? then you are in luck! These guys are getting right into the spirit of doors open with guided tours guided bus tours every half hour. A fabulous learning opportunity for everyone and especially the kids!
  • For details on participating sites (Newman Wine Vaults; The Johnson Geo Centre; St. John's Native Friendship Centre; The Court House; Apothecary Hall and more!!) visit Newfoundland Historic Trust Doors Open page
Also, on Sunday we have a busy day in and around St. John's! Doors Open continues, plus, MUN Botanical Gardens, is hosting their first ever Annual Children's Tea Party (Hmmm, why not show up for the Nature Hike, take in the Tea Party, then stick around for the Family Fun afternoon - make a nice day of it ;-), and the Friends of Salmonier Nature Park will be having a Teddy Bear Picnic with Terry Rielly at 2PM.

Last but not least, I want to mention the Family Fun Day by Hunt's Transport on Sagona Ave from 11-3PM Sunday,  in aid of Children's Wish Foundation: activities include a bouncy castle, BBQ, photo opportunities in vintage pick-up and transport trucks, ticket sales on an afternoon aboard a 46ft yacht and much more.  Head over for some fun and to support a great cause :-)

All this in addition to the many wonderful "regular" events :-) Details on these events and more in my calendar at the bottom of every page!

Have a good one ;-)

For details on events in & around town, check my events calendar regularly - it is on the bottom of EVERY page :-) The Tely Go Guide published in Arts & Life section every Thursday is also a good source.

If you have something to add to the Calendar, please let me know! Complete details can be found here and I welcome being added to any "Events Distribution list" your facility might have :-)
