What To Do This Holiday Break - Visit the Basilica, Celebrate Christmas with Wonderbolt and go to a New Year's Eve Skating Party!

Well folks, here is the sort & sweet list of events in the calendar between now and Old Christmas Day on January 6th. Assuming the world does not end tomorrow (Friday, Dec 21st, the last day according to the Mayan calendar ;-), my top picks in the coming days are: a visit to the Basilica to see their Nativities from Around the World exhibition (daily until Dec. 23rd), the Wonderbolt Christmas Party on Saturday and Tim Horton's New Year's Eve Family Skate on the 31st. As always, full details on these events and more can be found in the calendar on the bottom of every page on this blog.

I will be offline over the Holidays to enjoy the Christmas Break with my kids - I invite anyone with an event to share to post it in the comment section of this post as that would likely be the best way to get the word out without me checking in frequently :-)

Thank you to each and every one of you for stopping by my blog! I can't believe it has been over 2 years! Looking forward to sharing with you again in 2013 :-)

A Rant on "Merry Christmas"

source

So, first off, let me tell you: I am not Christian.

Why tell you this now? Well, because I want you to know it does not play any part when I express the following sentiment: I get SO irate when people complain about other people saying "Merry Christmas" or when they see that phrase in stores (or on buses, like on the news last night!).

People, religious tolerance does NOT mean that I hide my religion or beliefs from you! It means we ACCEPT each other's beliefs and do not judge or discriminate against one another due to differences of opinion.

If someone says Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukkah, or Happy Diwali, it is not that they wish to impose their belief system on you, rather, they are sharing with you the joy they feel at a time of year that is special to them!

....There is nothing wrong with that....

It does not diminish your Ramadan or Sukkot, your Diwali, or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or any other religious or secular celebration you hold dear.

The outward joy and celebration of Christians at Christmas are not meant to make you feel left out, nor are they an attempt to sway you to "their" side.

It is simply joy.

Remember, you were on air the whole month before your wedding day? You had a smile for everyone!

Or when your child was born, and you had such a natural high and a LOVE  for humanity  because you felt so connected to the world through the miracle of life?

... Well, THAT feeling of immense peace, joy and contentment is what Christians are celebrating! And, you lucky dog you, they are SHARING it with you!!

That's right folks, no matter what your religion, you can join in on the merriment and festivities of another! What better way to show respect for our differences?!

I, for one, DO celebrate Christmas. I have many, many, many Christians in my family and among my friends. I do not believe in Jesus as the son of God, but he WAS a  wise man. He had many great teachings. Christmas is in honour of that, and of his birth, and I am happy to recognize that and teach it to my children (who, by the way, are being raised in a predominantly Christian society and therefore should have at least a basic understanding of the impact Christianity has on our culture - statutory holidays, for example, or of God as the protector of keeping our land glorious and free).

Neither Christians nor their predominance in Canadian culture infringe upon the rights of the rest of us with their decorations, sayings, holidays.... whatever. If we remove all references to Christianity from our society, or if we change our language to reflect the generic Season's Greetings or Holiday Tree, we become that which we fight against: oppressive. We do not augment our freedoms by stomping on the freedoms of others!

The Christian aspects of our society are a part of our culture as a community, they reflect our history, our ties to those who came long before us and to those who built this country as we know it today. Does that mean it was without mistakes or injustices? Heck no, but we must move forward as kindred spirits, united in our desire for equality and tolerance for all.

Crushing expressions of Christianity does not increase awareness of other belief systems.... communication does that.

So, don't begrudge the "Merry Christmas" message on the bus, or the Christmas carols playing in the stores, or the tree at work..... Put a Menorah alongside the tree and wish folks a "Happy Belated Hanukkah". When you hit the stores on Boxing Day, say "Happy Kwanzaa"! When a friend expresses her joy at the birth of Christ the Saviour who died for her sins, share in the comfort it gives her and relate it to the peace you have from learning the universal messages in the Quran as told by God to Muhammad....

....And, if someone says "Merry Christmas", don't get insulted, just smile and say "And Happy New Year!"

Heartache

There are no words, none at all, to describe the heartbreak we all feel over the massacre of the children and teachers in Connecticut. My heart goes out to the families and community. I ache each time I hear a news report or see a picture of the sweet faces...

Here is a summary of the lives lost... Let us not forget their names, their futures, their bravery...

...may they all rest in peace.

Recall - 'Water Balz' and 'Growing Skulls' expanding toys by Dunecraft

The following recall notice is from HSW:

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report of a recall involving 'Water Balz' and 'Growing Skulls' expanding toys marketed by Dunecraft. When the marble-sized toy is ingested, it expands inside the body and causes a blockage in the small intestine, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and could be life threatening. The toys do not show up on an x-ray and require surgery to be removed from the body. See HSW Products tab for specifics on the affected items (including additional photos). Note, CPSC recall involves two more models of toys ('Despicable Me' and 'Fabulous Flowers') sold exclusively in U.S.
CPSC is aware of one report of an 8-month-old girl from Humble, Texas who ingested a Water Balz and suffered an intestinal obstruction in August 2011. The Water Balz had to be surgically removed.

Sold in Canada through various retailers and websites from September 2010 to November 2012.

Corrective Action:
Consumers should immediately take this recalled toy away from children and contact Dunecraft for a free replacement toy.
For more information, consumers can contact Dunecraft Inc. at 1-800-306-4168 ext.109, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website and click on the recall tab for more information.

What To Do This Weekend - Mummers, Movies and Your Last Chance TO Shop a Craft Fair!

Here we are again, another later-than-usual What to do this Weekend post! What can I say - it's a busy time of year!

source
Today, we took our kids to see Rise of the Guardians - exciting stuff! Santa sports Naughty and Nice tattoos, the Easter Bunny is a tough dude with boomerangs and an Aussie accent and Jack Frost is all about a good time....when the world's children are threatened by Pitch Black, aka the Boogie Man (some darker/scarier parts here, so keep that in mind for younger kids), these much-loved children's heroes and their fellow guardians strive to protect them. Truly a feel good movie we all enjoyed - even my DH LOVED it, which is saying something (he stayed awake for the whole thing!!). It is in 3D at the Avalon Mall - put it on your fun list!

Not that a trip to the mall is your only option this weekend - the Mummer's Parade is on Saturday!!!! Whether you watch pr participate (all are welcome), this is not to be missed. It leaves from Bishop Field Elementary School on 46 Bond Street at 2:15 (line up at 2 pm if taking part) and will continue to the Rooms, where there will be a Mummer's Parade Concert and Jam Session at 3PM.

Another fun event this weekend will be the Last Chance Gift Fair at the Holiday Inn on Sunday from 10 AM - 4PM. In addition to many fantastic local crafters and vendors, there are also amusements for the kids: Sassy Tuna will be there from opening until 1pm as well as Fun with a Twist... twisting balloons and making very unique creations! Admission proceeds and donations go to Ronald McDonald House!

Oh, and last but not least, Sunday marks the last night of Hanukkah 2012! Even if you don't celebrate it, it is a wonderful time to teach the children about different beliefs within our culture and province. Consider making some kugel or latkes (yum), explaining the gelt tradition (and them giving them some, part of which they may give to charity), or make a dreidel to play with. We like to listen to the Bare Naked Ladies Holiday album which features traditional Christmas and Hanukkah tunes all in the same CD!

Here's the short and sweet list for the coming week:

Sat Dec 15, 2012
  • MUMMERS PARADE CONCERT AND JAM (The rooms)
  • St. John’s Farmers’ Market - Lion’s Club Chalet on Bonaventure Avenue

12/12/12 Fun!

Today is 12/12/12! And it has me thinking about whether there is a way to make some family fun out of it....soooo....

...here are my ideas for 12/12/12 FuN (12 of them!):

  1. 12 kisses before school, 12 more after school, 12 kisses before bed = 12/12/12 kisses!
  2. 12 extra minutes of playtime
  3. 12 minutes cuddling with Mommy
  4. Everyone share 12 things they are grateful for
  5. 12 baby carrots packed in lunch
  6. 12 mini-cookies for snack
  7. read 12 books to wee-ones or read 12 pages of a novel aloud with older ones
  8. listen to the 12 Days of Christmas :-)
  9. Watch the 121212 Sandy Relief Concert
  10. Tell your kids 12 reasons why you love them
  11. Tell Hubby 12 reasons why you love him
  12. Give $12 each to 3 different charities :-)
And just for your reading pleasure, here are 12 tidbits about 12/12/12:
  1. In Chinese numerology, one represents independence and individualism (a yin quality). Two represents symmetry and balance (a yang quality). When placed together as the number 12, the yin and yang are balanced and bring harmony to each other - and so it is believed 12/12/12 equals lots of harmony!
  2. 12 can also be viewed as 3 X 4 - Three represents the soul or godhead. Four is the number of earth and mankind. And so, the product of the two numbers, 12, encompasses both the secular and the sacred and brings both to the forefront in our lives today.
  3. While 12/21/12 is regarded by most as the Mayan End of the World, some believe the date falls on 12/12/12. In response to this and other Doomsday preparations around the world, a group has declared that today is  Anti-Doomsday Day to encourage rational thinking and reason!
  4. 12 is easily divided into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and twelfths, one of the reasons it is so commonly used in measurements: 12 inches in a foot, 12 ounces in a troy pound (used to measure gold, silver and gems), and 12 in a dozen, etc.
  5. The number 12 is prominent in religion  -12 apostles, 12 Days of Christmas, Jacob fathered 12 sons leading to the 12 tribes of Israel...
  6. ... and it is also prominent in mythology - 12 Olympian gods, 12 labours of Hercules...
  7. ... and in the zodiac: 12 signs in both the Western Zodiac and in Chinese astrology
  8. Most humans have 12 pairs of ribs.
  9. There are 12 face cards in a deck.
  10. 12 people have walked on the moon: Neil Armstrong; Buzz Aldrin; Pete Conrad ; Alan Bean ; Alan Shepard ; Ed Mitchell; David Scott; James Irwin; John Young; Charles Duke; Harrison “Jack” Schmitt; Eugene Cernan
  11. December 12, 2012 is exactly 6 years, 6 months, 6 days from June 6, 2006, or 06/06/06.
  12. Twelve often represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another - 12 months in a year; every 12 hours day turns to night or night to day.

Too Quiet

I have a sick little man home today. For the past 12 hours, my usually boisterous boy has been still and quiet on the couch, with extremely little to say. He complained a couple of times yesterday of a headache, and came out to my bed last night feeling weak and dizzy and feverish (he's 102.3)...  He had a hard morning, but is keeping clear liquids down this afternoon, thank goodness, and he napped for a couple of hours.

His only sign of awareness or life all day was to move from the family room couch to the one in the game room when his brother came home.... where he promptly fell asleep watching Mario play on the Wii.

All this to say my house is full and yet unbelievably quiet!!! And I don't like it!

Happy Hanukkah!

It's here! Tonight marks the first night of Hanukkah 2012. It will continue for 8 nights and the following days, ending on the evening of Sunday, December 16, 2012.

source

Tonight, the candle on the far right of the menorah is lit, with one additional candle being lit each night until the end of Hanukkah. While Christians will use electric candles or Christmas lights nowadays, it would be very rare to see electric or even gas Hanukkah lights, as Hanukkah itself represents the miracle of the temple oil, that should have only lasted one night, burning for 8 nights. The candles are lit at Sundown, and usually remain lit until the stars are visible in the sky, about 30 minutes. The family gathers for the lighting each night, and special blessings are read. No work is done in the vicinity of the candles during this burning time, especially not housework, it is time spent telling stories or reading the Torah.

The Torah is also read during the 8 days of Hanukkah and it is customary to increase charitable donations and works during this time. Children receive  Hanukkah gelt (money), adding to the overall festivity and excitement :-)

You have no doubt heard of latkes - potato pancakes - which are a popular Hanukkah food, as are any foods cooked in oil (to reference the Hanukkah miracle) - bring on the doughnuts! Cheesy food also figures prominently to honour the story of Judith, who used a simple meal of cheese and wine to lure an enemy general to his death (meaning that when he fell over drunk, she stabbed him with his own sword!), allowing for a successful surprise counter attack by the Hebrew inhabitants of the town he was holding under siege.

Happy Birthday, Walt!

source
Today is Walt Disney's Birthday! The creator of Mickey Mouse and all our favourite animated characters was born on Dec. 1 1905. Sadly, he passed away at only 65 in 1966. But, in that short life, he managed to give us the gift of laughter and fantasy! He had a gift for reaching out to children AND to the child in all of us....here are some insights into the mind of the man who did that so well:

"Our heritage and ideals, our code and standards - the things we live by and teach our children - are preserved or diminished by how freely we exchange ideas and feelings."

"A man should never neglect his family for business."

“"Think, Believe, Dream, and Dare.

Movies can and do have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives of normal adulthood.”

There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and at the bottom of the Spanish Main... and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life.”

“Too many people grow up. That's the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up. They forget. They don't remember what it's like to be 12 years old. They patronize, they treat children as inferiors. Well I won't do that.”

"I don't believe in talking down to children. I don't believe in talking down to any certain segment. I like to kind of just talk in a general way to the audience. Children are always reaching."

"You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway."

HSW/Health Canada Holiday Toy Safety Tips

Ever thought of safety tips for all those gifts on Christmas Day? Well, the folks at HSW did.... here is their post Health Canada encourages holiday shoppers to consider toy safety

Many Canadians are starting the much-anticipated Holiday shopping this time of year. The following information is adapted from various official documents from Canada and the U.S. and highllights some of the precautions people should take while choosing the toys for children this year. See Sources tab for original articles.
Being informed shoppers helps consumers choose toys to keep children safe.
Recommendations from Health Canada:• Always supervise children at play and teach them how to use toys safely.
• Select toys suitable for the child's age group, and make sure to read and follow all instructions provided with the toy.
• When preparing your toy shopping list, check the Government of Canada's recalls and safety alerts database for recalled toys.
• When purchasing riding toys, like scooters, or skates, skis or a snowboard as a gift, give the appropriate safety gear, too.
• Appropriate helmets and safety gear should be worn properly at all times, and they should be sized to fit.
• Toys with small loose parts can be dangerous for children under three years of age or older children who are still putting things in their mouths. Keep them out of reach.

Recommendations from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:To help keep what has been called the most wonderful time of the year happy and incident-free, CPSC is encouraging consumers to adopt a three-pronged safety approach.
Which Toy for Which Child: Always choose age appropriate toys.

Gear Up for Safety: Include safety gear whenever shopping for sports-related gifts or ride-on toys, including bicycles, skates, and scooters.

Location, Location, Location: Be aware of your child's surroundings during play. Young children should avoid playing with ride-on toys near automobile traffic, pools or ponds. They also should avoid playing in indoor areas associated with hazards such as kitchens and bathrooms and in rooms with corded window blinds.

Here are some additional safety steps that consumers can take while shopping this holiday season:Scooters and other Riding Toys: Riding toys, skateboards, and in-line skates go fast, and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn properly at all times and be sized to fit. A recent recall of a riding toy and numerous bicycle recalls emphasizes the importance of this advice.
Small Balls and other Toys with Small Parts:
For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.

Balloons:
Children can choke or suffocate on deflated or broken balloons. Keep deflated balloons away from children younger than eight years old. Discard broken balloons at once.

Magnets:
For children under age six, avoid building or play sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.

Once the gifts are open:• Immediately discard plastic wrappings or other packaging on toys before they become dangerous play things.
• Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.
• Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to young children. Pay attention to instructions and warnings
